How to Understand Your Space Before Decorating Your Home

In order to understand your space, there are a few principles to keep in mind: Scale, Proportion, Line, Balance, Harmony & Rhythm.

Scale

Scale refers to how the size of something relates to the size of something else.

Proportion

Proportion refers to the relationship of objects to one another based on size. You have achieved good scale when all parts are proportionately correct. It takes patience and experimentation to get this right, so work with it until you are satisfied.

Line

You should incorporate as many of the following lines into your plan as possible with furniture and accessories.

Vertical lines display strength and have a formal look. An example are the columns you see in homes or on exterior porches.

Horizontal lines have a relaxing feel. An example would be a bed or sofa.

Diagonal lines represent motion and change, like gables on a home.

Curved lines represents freedom and sensuality. An example is a winding path.

Balance

Balance is acheived when everything is distributed evenly throughout the space and feels natural and comfortable to the eye. The items can be situated symmetrical or asymmetrical.

Symmetry feels more formal and traditional with same sized objects placed opposite of each other. Placement must be identical.

Asymmetry refers to different sized objects placed opposite each other and can be pleasing if the scale is correct. Asymmetry has an informal feel and is typically used in contemporary settings.

Harmony

Harmony is when all the elements relate to one another. For example, matching styles, colors, and patterns pull a room together.

Rhythm

Rhythm refers to repeating patterns and moves you around the room. The key to making harmony and rhythm work is balance. Always add at least one contrasting element for interest.

Create Your Plan and Decorate Your Home in 5 Easy Steps

First step: determine what you like and don’t like about the space. Try to work with the space instead of against it.

Second step: walk around the room and see if there is an easy flow. Look at how the furniture is arranged. Is there a focal point in the room? Does the room feel cozy? Is the size of the furniture relative to the space?

Third step: take measurements of the room and furniture to see how they will be arranged in the space.

Fourth step: make a sketch in freehand. Pencil in electrical outlets, switches, cable outlets, phone jacks, heat registers and light fixtures. Draw plans on 1/4 inch graph paper. Each square equals one foot.

Fifth step: create furniture templates based on the 1/4 inch scale. You can find a simple template here or search online for other options.

Now that you have the steps to help you understand your space and create a plan for decorating it, you should be looking at the rooms in your home differently. You can use these tools to help you create the home you’ve been dreaming of. 🙂
