How to Stay Organized at Home-5 EASY Tips
My organizing clients’ biggest challenge after our sessions is finding the best way to stay organized at home. Most people don’t realize that it is easier to get organized than it is to stay organized. Let’s explore five ways you can get and STAY organized at home.
While organizing a space, I always teach strategies to keep the room organized. I usually check in on my clients about 30 days after we finish to see how those strategies work for them. If it’s not going well, we’ll tweak some things to tailor it to the family’s way of doing things.
Here are a few strategies I use to teach clients how to get and stay organized at home:
How to Stay Organized at Home
Start Taking Notes to Get Organized
Taking notes is a great way to stay organized. Whether you use a pen and paper or your phone to keep track of things, make sure you use it. When something comes up on your schedule, immediately put it on your calendar.
If there is something you need to do or purchase for an event, mark that down on your calendar to do it a week before. Example: Your child has a birthday party to attend in 2 weeks, and you will need to purchase a gift. Mark the date and address of the party on your calendar, and then one week before the party, write, “Purchase a card and birthday gift for ______.”
Putting the event on your calendar will eliminate the stress of running out to buy a last-minute gift on the way to the party. Notes can be used for everything from grocery lists to your everyday to-do list.
Creating lists will allow your mind to rest because now it doesn’t have to keep reminding itself of what needs to be done. For the last 14 years, my family has been using the FREE Cozi app to keep track of our appointments, and we absolutely love it. No other calendar app can compare!
How to Create Routines to Stay Organized at Home
Create routines to help you stay organized at home. Examples would be to make your bed each morning, place your keys on a hook or a tray, pay bills on the 1st and 15th, change and wash the sheets every Saturday, and leave your shoes at the door. A post I wrote titled 7 Easy Steps to Organize Your Entire Home can be found here for more info!
Follow a Meal Plan to Get Organized
Planning out weekly meals will definitely help you stay organized at home. You will create a grocery list and purchase the required items. If done correctly, you shouldn’t need to go to the grocery store for the rest of the week.
Planning your meals will reduce the stress of deciding “what’s for dinner” each night and help you save some serious money. If you need help getting started, this post will walk you through the steps to create your very own meal plan. If you’re not interested in doing it yourself or don’t have the time to create a meal plan, don’t worry; I’ve already done it for you! 😉

How to Use an Inbox to Stay Organized at Home
Another way to help you stay organized at home is to designate a place to store an inbox. Place incoming mail, permission slips, and any other forms that need attention here and go through it once a week. When you go through the box, place the paper wherever it is destined to go: sign permission slips and put them in backpacks, place bills into the “bill pay” file, etc. Only touch items from the inbox once.
Create a Cleaning Schedule to Get Organized
Create a schedule for daily cleaning touch-ups. If you can work on a little cleaning each day, it will eliminate the need to spend a whole day (or week!) cleaning the house, and you will feel more in control. Click here or the image below to download your cleaning schedule!
These are just a few of the strategies I teach my clients. I know one strategy may work for some clients but not others. It is important to remember that if it doesn’t work for you, don’t give up; try something new.
Following or tweaking these five strategies will help you get and stay organized at home once and for all!
I’d love to know what strategies you use to stay organized. Leave them in the comments!

Thanks for hosting! Lots of new blogs I plan to visit. 🙂
Laundry was the worst part if staying organized. I had two teenaged boys and a husband, who all wore about the same size. I couldn’t tell one man’s socks, etc. from another. So one day I bought three hampers and told them, you’re on your own. Complaints died down after I told the boys it was part of ‘bachelor training.’ Then I wrote a little Bachelor Book with basic instructions for cooking mac ‘n’ cheese and paying bills, etc. It kind of backfired on me, though. They are 25 and 30 and still self-sufficient bachelors.
Thanks for liking my blog. I love yours and am now going to be a follower!!!
Your blog is great – many great articles/posts on getting and staying organized!
Thank you! 🙂
That’s a good tip about planning meals. Doing that not only helps me know what stuff to buy on the grocery. It’s also effective in ensuring that I have a well-balanced diet.
These are great tips! I also believe in doing a little something toward cleaning your home everyday. No one wants to spend an entire day cleaning – by doing a little each day you can avoid that feeling of overwhelm.
I totally agree! Thanks for your comment. 🙂
I love the birthday tip. I have the hardest time with birthdays.
I know! Once I figured out this little trick, it really helped me stay on top of things. A true life saver! 🙂
