Although today’s fast-paced lifestyles often mean quick, easy meals, the dining room should be a place to relax and enjoy a leisurely meal. If your dining room is used every day, you will have to be practical in how you decorate it. However, if it is only used a couple of times a year, you can be a bit more daring.
7 Foolproof Ways to Decorate Your Dining Room
- If the dining room opens to other rooms like the kitchen or living room, the style and colors should coordinate with those other rooms.
- The focal point in the dining room is usually the table or a hutch, depending on the way you place the furniture. Place a centerpiece on the table to add interest.
- When selecting a table, select as big a table that will comfortably fit. Be sure to leave at least 32-36 inches between the table and the wall so you can have enough space to move the chair out from the table.
- If you place an area rug under the table, make sure it is large enough to accommodate the table when it is fully extended.
- If you are purchasing a dining set, remember that the chairs don’t have to match. You can mix styles and woods to create an interesting look.
- If you choose to add a china cabinet or buffet to the room, think about ways you can display objects that reveal your personality instead of dishes.
- Hang a light fixture over the center of the table. Install the light fixture so that the bottom is 27-36 inches above the table.
When decorating your dining room, incorporate touches that represent who you are.
Keep tweaking it until it feels right. This is your home…make it your own! 😉

I bought a dining room table about a year ago and still haven’t had a chance to put it up yet. Hopefully I’ll get to it soon!
Oh man! That’s a long time! 🙂 I totally understand, though. The dining room is usually the least used room in the house and easily forgotten about. Hopefully, you’ll get to it soon so you can begin to enjoy some great meals in there!
