Declutter Your Entire Home in 7 Quick Steps
Your home should be a place of rest and rejuvenation. If you’re buried in clutter, I’m sure you and your family are not excited to come home every day. So, today I’d like to post seven quick steps to declutter your entire home.
7 Tips to Declutter Your Entire Home
Keep a trash can in each room.
A trash can will help you discard trash right away so you can’t set it down on a counter or worse, the floor!
Don’t bring anything new into the house.
When you begin decluttering, you will find items you thought you lost or didn’t know you had… they were either buried or forgotten. Until you are able to get to some serious decluttering, don’t bring anything new into the house. Remember, the more things you have, the more things you have to take care of. Less is more!
Place a recycling bin, trash can, and shredder wherever you collect the mail.
Immediately shred, recycle, or trash the mail you don’t intend to read. Place the mail you’re keeping in a basket or tray to be sorted later.
Do a quick pick-up each day.
Each night before bed, do a quick run-through of the house and put things where they belong. Set a timer for 10-15 minutes and have the kids help pick up their items. Now you can enjoy the rest of the evening!
In our house, we live by the expression “Everything Has a Place.” If you keep this saying in mind, you will be able to maintain order in your home. Everything that enters your home needs to have a place of its own. If you use something, put it back when you’re finished using it. It may seem like more work to stay on top of things, but in the long run, it will save you a lot of time and stress. If you don’t tend to the objects in your life, they will quickly turn into clutter.

Place hampers in everyone’s closet or bathroom.
A hamper will eliminate the need to throw dirty clothes and towels on the floor and will make laundry day a little easier to get through.
Put a hook near the entry door.
Hang your keys on the hook when you enter the house, and then you can just grab them on the way out!
Ask for help!
You are not the only person in your house capable of tidying up. Keeping the house in order is everyone’s responsibility. Teach everyone how to pick up after themselves, and the load will feel much lighter.
If you commit to following these seven quick steps to declutter your entire home, You will start to feel the stress of clutter beginning to melt away. You and your family will feel calmer and more connected.

Putting things back into their place immediately after use is the best thing I was taught as a child!
Absolutely! The challenge now is getting our children to adopt this concept! LOL! Thanks for your comment. 🙂
Don’t forget the recycle bins along with the trashcans. It makes sorting easier and our lives more “green” .
So true! All of our unwanted papers go directly into a bin for recycling. Will update the post to include recycling bin/trash can. Thanks!
I know! I see this in just about every home I organize. A small change that really makes a world of difference. Thanks for stopping by!
It is so funny because #1 seems obvious, however so many of my clients don’t have trash cans except for the kitchen and bathrooms. And I love your statement, “Less is More”!!!
Number 3 is an awesome idea.
Thanks! Having a shredder and trash can has really helped to cut down on the paper clutter that can pile up. Thanks so much for commenting! 🙂
I’ve got a garbage can in every room and this makes it easy for the kids to put their crap in the trash too.
Yay! Everyone’s gotta help out! (Truth be told, it’s mostly their trash anyway.) 🙂 Thanks for your comment!
I gotta remember #4. Everything has a place. I definitely need to do the nightly pickup! Thanks
My kids are so sick of hearing me say that! LOL! But it sure helps to keep things in order. Hope it helps you as well. 🙂
