How to Hang Art on the Wall Properly
Once you have your rooms planned out and your accessories arranged, it’s time to learn how to hang art on the wall properly.
How to Hang Art on the Wall Properly
If you are planning to hang a group of prints, you have to decide if you want them to be symmetrical (a mirror image) or asymmetrical.
When designing with symmetry, remember that it is considered to be a formal arrangement and will look best in a traditional setting.
Asymmetrical arrangements are more informal and are best suited in contemporary settings.
Before you hang the art, first place it on the floor and try out different arrangements. Everything doesn’t have to be in a row. Try vertical groupings (they make the ceiling appear taller) or horizontal (makes the room seem wider).
You can hang an oval or rectangle piece over the fireplace mantle or sofa, or create an interesting combination of frame sizes and shapes.
When placing art over a sofa, it should sit anywhere from 6-9 inches above it.
Be sure to keep proportion in check. You don’t want to hang something too small over a large piece of furniture. The frame should be at least 2/3 the size of the piece below it.
When hanging artwork without furniture beneath it, the middle of the piece should be at eye-level-55 to 60 inches from the floor.
You can also group smaller-sized art together to give it more presence in the room.
Use a Template to Hang Art on the Wall
Lots of picture frames and collage sets come with templates for you to use so you can decide on the arrangement before putting holes in the wall.
Here’s a little trick to hang art on the wall properly if you don’t have templates:
- trace the frames onto heavy paper
- cut them out
- tape the paper frames to the wall
- hammer the nail through the paper
- remove the paper
- hang the artwork
Try to create unity by using matching frame colors or mats. You could also create unity by hanging all black and white photography even if the frames are different.
Wall art is not limited to pictures or frames, it includes shelves, quilts, tapestries, masks, clocks…anything that can be hung on a wall. Be creative and use different types of wall art to keep things interesting.
As you can see, it’s not difficult to hang art on your walls if you know a few tricks! 😉
