The BEST Way to Declutter Your Pantry
Pantries store nonperishable food and dry goods, and the best way to declutter your pantry is to have everything in view. You will save a lot of time and money when you declutter and organize your pantry. You’ll save money because you’ll stop purchasing duplicates, and you’ll save time because you’ll be able to find your items quickly.
What is The Best Way to Declutter Your Pantry?
When you begin to declutter your pantry, take everything out, and throw away anything that’s expired. Donate any item you know you are not going to use. Sort the things you are going to keep.
Store canned goods, condiments, beverages, cereals, soups, pasta, snacks, and other similar items together so they will be easy to locate when you need them. Make sure you can see each item and that it is not expired.
Risers for canned goods will keep the items in the back of the cabinet in view.
If you have standard shelves in your pantry, add some slide-out drawers. These drawers allow you to store more items, and nothing gets lost in the back.
If your pantry is small, only keep food items there and put things like cleaning and paper products somewhere else. If you have extra space in your pantry, store small kitchen appliances there.
Take a look at pantry organizers online. Add additional storage with pull-out shelves, racks attached to the pantry door, and a two-tiered lazy Susan.
The secret to keeping your pantry organized is to use labels. Labels can help your family members remember where to put things when they are finished using them. Here are the labels I recommend to my clients.
Pantry Organization System
Keep back-ups in your pantry so that you can reach into your pantry for a new one when something is used up. A great tip to keep up with what you need to shop for is to jot down items to add to your next grocery trip. This grocery shopping list can help you stay on top of what you need.
When refilling your pantry, keep items you frequently use at the level between your knees and shoulders, with heavy items at the bottom. Place items used less regularly above shoulder height. Put a small step stool in the pantry to reach things on the top shelf.
Organize the pantry in a way that makes you happy. It doesn’t have to be super neat, just organized!

Never Hear “What’s for Dinner?” Again!
If you struggle with making decisions each night about what to make for dinner, I created a 28-day meal plan that can help make life easier for you! This printable includes 44 pages of 28 family-friendly, taste-tested, and healthy meals. Each of the four weeks is broken down into seven recipes (with photos!), complete with grocery lists.
All you have to do is order the food, have it delivered from your favorite store, and prepare one of the meals each night. Of course, if you prefer to visit the grocery store and purchase the food yourself, you’re free to do that as well!
Also included in the meal plan is a Weekly Dinner Meal Planner that you can fill out and hang up in your kitchen. Hanging this meal planner in your kitchen will eliminate the dreaded “What’s for Dinner?” question. Everyone will be able to see what’s for dinner each night on the meal planner.

I really like this pantry pictured. My pantry is 1/2 the width, but more depth, which can make it difficult to find things, but the shelving won’t handle slide outs — But, I think I will look into baskets like you have. Then I can pull out the basket and find what I need in it! Thanks for the pic, it helped see what would work for me. My husband built me a pullout narrow cabinet with shelves that I use to store cans. I can fit 3 or 4 cans deep, but when I pull out the cabinet, all the cans are visible. I love it! My husband is handy that way. Wish I had a picture of it. I am enjoying looking around your site. I love organizing!
Hi Janet! I’m glad the pictures in the post were helpful to you. I think using the baskets in your pantry will really allow you to see and use those items hiding in the back. How awesome that your husband built that cabinet for you! It sounds amazing and very practical. I’m glad you love organizing as much as I do. Thanks for stopping by! 🙂
Very informative but seems a little difficult to do in a rental. Can’t wait to get to our own house
Yes, I can see the difficulty of implementing some of these tips in a rental. Hopefully they’ll be more useful to you when you move. Thanks for visiting!
