4 Creative Ways to Declutter and Organize Your Cooking Spices
Something I notice when organizing kitchens is that my clients tend to keep their spices in multiple locations. Some are in the pantry, a few are in cabinets, and others are tossed into drawers. When spices are sprinkled throughout the kitchen, you have no way of knowing what you have on hand, and you’ll end up purchasing duplicates. This post will show you some creative ways to declutter and organize your cooking spices so they can all be kept together.
Reasons to Declutter and Organize Your Cooking Spices
Being able to store and see all of your spices at once will not only help you prepare food faster, but you’ll also save money! In addition, once you declutter and organize all of your spices, you’ll eliminate those last-minute runs to the grocery store to purchase a seasoning that was in your house the whole time!
First Declutter-Then Organize Your Spices
The first thing you’ll want to do is go through all of your drawers, cabinets, and pantry and bring all of your spices to one space (preferably your island or counter.)
Check the dates and toss those that are expired. Now, you’ll have to decide how you’re going to sort the spices you are keeping. You can choose to sort them based on how often you use them or based on your cooking style. Some examples would be baking, meats, grilling, etc.
The Best Way to Store Spices
Once you’ve collected all of your spices and tossed the expired ones, it’s time to relocate the ones you plan to keep. There are so many creative ways to declutter spices, but I always recommend storing them near your prep station in your kitchen. Hopefully, you have already designated a prep station, but if you haven’t, this post I wrote about organizing your kitchen using zones will help you create one.
When storing spices near your prep station, you can choose to keep them in a drawer, on the counter, or in a cabinet. If you have enough space, I would suggest organizing them in drawers because the spices will stay cleaner, and it will help keep the kitchen counters clutter-free.
Organize Spices in a Drawer
There are many ways you can organize
The tray that holds the spices is perfect
Glass Storage Jars
Next, you’re going to need the glass storage jars to finish storing the spices in your drawers. I recommend these jars because the mouth is large enough to fit measuring spoons, the lid is airtight, and the set also includes shaker tops and a funnel for refilling. For what you are receiving, the price is perfect!
Label the Jars
The glass jar set comes with labels already created, and you are free to use those; however, sometimes, I like to write the spice name on the jar with a Sharpie. This Sharpie is an oil-based, medium-point marker that is fade and water-resistant. If you decide to label the jars yourself, be sure to use an oil-based pen because a regular chalk marker will easily rub off.

Organize Spices in a Cabinet
If your drawer is not large enough for all of your spices, keeping them in a cabinet is another option. You can decide if you want them near the stove or your prep station. There are plenty of options available for storing your spices in a cabinet, but this one is my absolute favorite.
I love this spice holder because it fits perfectly in almost any cabinet, and it holds 30 full-size bottles. If you have half-sized bottles, it can house 60 spices. My clients love this organizer because it doesn’t require any tools to install. It just sits inside the cabinet, and the drawers pull out and down. It comes with labels that you can stick on the outside to know where the spices are located. We usually organize them alphabetically to make them even easier to use.
This unit is fantastic and a great option if you don’t want to use the space in a drawer to hold your spices.
Store Spices on the Counter
Some cooks prefer to keep their spices on a counter near the stove. This is an excellent option if you’re the type of cook that doesn’t use measurements and needs a quick and efficient way to use the spices while cooking. Of course, you can also store them on a counter near your prep station.
Not only is this 12 jar set beautiful, but it is also very compact, so it doesn’t take up too much space on the counter. In addition, the glass jars are large enough to fit one full bottle of spice, and labels are included.
Organize Spices in the Pantry
If you don’t like the idea of storing your spices in a drawer, cabinet, or on the counter, you can always opt to keep them in your pantry. This 3-tier spice rack comes as a two-pack and will hold about 30 spices! The great thing about this rack is that you’re able to see all of your spices at the same time. It can also be used to store spice refills and extra bottles of spices that don’t fit in your drawer or cabinet organizer.
Spice Storage Ideas
So, as you can see, there are many ways you can declutter and organize spices in your kitchen. You can store them in a drawer, in a cabinet, on a counter, or in the pantry. Whichever system you use, the important thing is to keep them together, so you’ll always know what’s on hand.
