How to Declutter Your Kitchen-A Beginner’s Guide

Why declutter the kitchen? Well, we cook there, we eat there, and whenever entertaining, everyone tends to gravitate to the kitchen. If we can find ways to create an efficient kitchen, life will feel less stressful. Having things where you need them will help you prepare meals faster and you will save time looking for items.

How Do I Declutter the Kitchen?

Declutter Kitchen Cabinets and Drawers

I like to set up a kitchen with zones. When items are stored where you use them, they are easier to find and can be put back where they belong.

The first thing you’ll need to do is open all of your drawers and cabinets (upper and lower) and ask yourself if the items are located in the proper place.

Kitchen Zones

  1. Food prep
  2. Stove
  3. Sink & Clean up
  4. Serving
  5. Pantry

Kitchen Declutter Action Steps

  • Keep knives and flatware in the prep area.
  • Locate cooking utensils, oils, spices, condiments, pots, and pans near the stove or cooktop.
  • Store dishes near the sink or dishwasher.
  • Corral cleaning supplies under the sink. Put a child lock on the cabinet if there are small children in the house.
  • Placemats, napkins, and tablecloths can be stored in the serving area.
  • Use the pantry for storing non-perishable food and dry goods.

Now that you know where the items belong, you can begin moving them to the correct places. I suggest purging anything you don’t use or need before going out to purchase any kitchen organizers. Most times, you will be able to make do with what you already have.

To keep your kitchen looking neat and tidy, only put things on the counter that you use every day.

What Items Do I Need to Organize My Kitchen?

drawer organizer for kitchen

This Silverware Drawer Organizer is perfect for your kitchen because it expands to fit any size drawer. It also has multiple sections to store different types of utensils.

over the door towel holder

It’s nice to have a towel handy to dry your hands or clean up a messy spill. This over-the-door towel holder is located in the perfect spot, so you’ll always have a clean towel ready when you need it!

under the cabinet sliding organizer

This organizer is the workhorse of the kitchen! I use quite a few of these under-the-cabinet sliding organizers when I am working with clients. They are excellent for keeping similar items together in the kitchen as well as in the bathroom. The mesh wire keeps smaller pieces from falling over and provides much-needed ventilation.

cutting board holders

These cutting board holders are great for tucking under a cabinet and holding cutting boards, baking sheets, and cooling racks. They make it so easy to be able to reach down and grab exactly what you need without having to lift and move things around!

Final Thoughts

Decluttering the kitchen is a job that could take a few days to complete, so be sure to pace yourself. I don’t recommend taking everything out all at once unless you have someone there to help and motivate you to finish the job.

I hope these tips have inspired you to declutter and organize your kitchen.  If you have any questions or comments, feel free to leave them below! 🙂

  1. Wow. Thanks so much for this post. This is so helpful. My husband and I are moving to a two bedroom at the beginning of June and although the place overall is bigger than where we currently like, the kitchen is about half the size of what I am use to (I have been spoiled by my old place). I was a little bit worried about how I would make do with less space as I did not need to be efficient with my space at our current place, but will definitely need to now. Will definitely be following your 12 week series as I unpack to my new place. Just in time.

  2. I love the pictures and ideas o how to make the most of kitchen space. I only wish I had all of them? I especially like the storage for cutting boards and cookies sheets.
