How to Keep a Clean Home When You Hate to Clean + FREE Checklist!
How is it possible to keep a clean home when you hate to clean? It’s actually pretty easy! After reading these 5 simple tips, you’ll see how you can have a clean home even if you hate to clean!
How to Have a Clean Home When You Hate to Clean
If you are like me and really don’t enjoy cleaning your home, my first piece of advice is: Don’t aim for perfection. Trust me, when someone comes to your home, they will not notice every little detail. If you work on keeping certain areas neat and tidy, your entire house will appear clean! Find time to tidy up or clean the entryway, kitchen counters, kitchen sink, and bathrooms every day. Those are the areas guests will notice if they are not clean. They can be straightened up throughout the day, not all at once. You can get to the other areas of your home when you can.
How to store items away quickly
My second piece of advice is to invest in storage options that allow you to store items away quickly without too much fuss. Storage ottomans, entertainment centers with drawers, bins with baskets- all of these options can help keep your home looking clean with minimal effort. At the end of the day or when the doorbell rings, just throw the toys or items into the bins and keep it moving.
Where to store cleaning supplies
Next, store cleaning supplies where you actually use them. This way, you don’t have to run around the house collecting cleaning supplies. I don’t know about you, but whenever I walk into another room, I sometimes forget what I was going there to get. Having the supplies on hand means the job will get done when you are thinking about it.

Can minimalism help keep your house clean?
My fourth piece of advice is to adopt a “less is more” mentality. If you have less stuff, you’ll have less to clean. I know, easier said than done! 😉
Is it time to hire a cleaning company?
And when all else fails, and you’re not able to carry out the previous four steps, my last piece of advice is to hire someone to clean for you. It is an expense, but it may be worth it if it reduces your stress level by eliminating “one more thing that has to be done” from your life.
Don’t feel guilty about hiring help. Having your home cleaned by someone else will free you up to do the other things you’ve always wanted to do. There is no sense in spending time doing something you hate when you can be doing something you love! 🙂
What about you? Do you hate cleaning? Would you consider hiring help to get it done?

I like the tips and I won’t have a cleaning lady now but I think I will if I ever become to old to do it myself
Hi Doris, I feel the same way. Thanks for commenting! ~Leigh
Haha, my favorite is this- I would suggest storing cleaning supplies where you actually use them.- because, I too, walk into a room and forget what I was doing. I need to invest in cleaning supplies for each and every room of the house!! Congrats on getting a featured post at the Family Joy Linky Party! I hope you are able to join us often!
Hi Rachel! Keeping the cleaning supplies handy will definitely help you get your cleaning done quickly. Thanks for letting me know about being featured… I had no idea! 🙂
I hate cleaning. I actually am really Teri led at it also. Once a month I do have a crew come in and give it a good cleaning. Then I feel my only objective is to tidy. I can do that much easier than an actual clean. I know when the house is sparkling there is an internal sigh. It’s very calming.
Your tips on the counters and bath are spot on. Thanks for all the great suggestions
Hi Mary, I used to have a cleaning crew come in also, but I got tired of them breaking things and I always felt I had to go behind them to clean things they missed. I didn’t feel it was worth the money, so I do it myself. I’m glad it works for you! Thanks for commenting! 🙂
These are great tips! I am that mom who hates cleaning, so I’ll have to refer to this later. Thank you for joining the Family Joy link party! 🙂
I’m glad you found the post helpful!
I do like to clean, but there are certain rooms in my room I ignore forever. Thanks for sharing these tips as well with us at Family Joy Blog Link Up Party. Have a wonderful rest of your week.
I know what you mean! There are certain rooms in my house that I dread!
Leigh, you always share such amazing ways on how to organize and live a better life. I really enjoy your posts. Thanks for sharing with #SocialButterflySunday last week. The link is up for the party this week so I hope you will join the party again this week 🙂
Thanks for your kind words Kelly. I’ll be sure to stop by!~Leigh
Storing things where you use them I think is the best tip ever. I don’t want to know how much time I’ve wasted moving back and forth from where things are stored and where I actually need them. Wasted time!
Happy New Year to you!
Oh how I would love to hire some on to clean. At least my scary cluttered basement.
I wish I could hire someone to clean my house also. A housecleaner and a personal chef would be perfect! A girl can dream, right? 😉
I, for one, hate to clean so I do it in stages. For example, Friday night, I’ll clean the bathrooms and then tackle the rest of the house on Saturday and a little more on Sunday. We’ve had the house professionally cleaned before but it is an added expense so we don’t do it often. Great post, thanks for the tips!
Hi Gail, Cleaning in stages is the way to go for me. Trying to do it all at once is exhausting…trust me, I’ve tried (and failed!). Happy New Year!
